Day
1 |
• During the morning trip around
Aix you will visit the Saint-Sauveur Cathedral (a building of a
mixture of designs where alterations and additions have been made
which gives it its charm, dating from the 4th century up to the
18th century. Further on, you will visit the Saint-Jean de Malte
church, a building dating from 8th century, outside the city walls,
which became in the 19th century the 5th largest parish in the
town of Aix en Provence.
• Free time for lunch.
• In the afternoon there will be a visit to the Ganagobie Benedictine
church open from 3.00 pm until 7.00 pm, where the fineviews over
the Durance river and the Valensole plateau may be seen. Roman
church dating from the 11th century, which cloister dates back
from the end of the 12th century, a remarkable portal altered in
the 16th century, and precious roman mosaics decorated with geometric
motives and fabulous figures. Half board in Aix en Provence.
Day
2 |
• Morning visit
to the St Victor Abbey in Marseilles, a roman fortress dating
from the 11th century with a crypt, some parts of which date
back from 5th century.
• Following this a visit of the renowned Notre Dame de la Garde,
a fine example of Byzantine influence, nicknamed "The good
mother" by the people of Marseilles. An excellent collection
of "ex-votos".
• Transfer to Cassis, the small Mediteranean fishing harbour.
Free time for lunch in Cassis, which offers vast amounts of small
fish restaurants.
• The afternoon: a boat trip around the famous calanques in Cassis,
the high calcareous cliffs diving into the sea, then a departure
for the Thoronet and the visit of the Cistercienne Abbey dating
from the 12th century. Half board in Aix en Provence.
Day
3 |
• In the morning:
visit to the Silvacane Abbey, one out of the 3 Cistercian Abbeys
situated in Provence, that was built at the beginning of the
12th century. Free time for lunch in Gordes, one of the most
beautiful villages of the Luberon and then, discovery of the
village.
• In the afternoon : visit of the 3rd cistercian abbey : The
Senanque Abbey - testimony of the monas-tic architecture of the
12th century-that was fonded in 1148 by monks who came from Mazan
en Vivarais and that is still occuped by a small community of
monks.
• Then a walk in Fontaine de Vaucluse along the banks of the
Sorgue river is planned. Possibility of visiting a paper mill,
that still use a method of manufacturing that dates back from
the 15th century. Half board in Aix en Provence.
Day
4 |
• A morning visit to the Montmajour
Abbey dating from 9th century to 18th century, (your attention
is drawn to a vast quantity of steps to be climbed).
• Followed by a departure for the Baux de Provence, with free
time to discover this delightful town and eat lunch.
• In the afternoon there is a visit of the town of Arles, the
Saint Trophime and the 12th century cloister. Half board in Aix
en Provence.
