After four years of renovation, the Granet Museum reopened its doors in 2006, completely transformed and thus becoming one of the region’s most distinguished Fine Arts museums.
Its exhibition area has been enlarged from 700 to 4,000 sq.m and its interior design completely updated.
The “paintings”section and in particular the “French”collection will be presented in different units based around an artist, a particular piece
of work,or a theme:
• the French Renaissance,
• the 15th Century around Puget,
• the 18th Century,a flourishing period in Aix,features two parts:an intimate part around portraits by Rigaud and Largillière; and an official part around three works of art from the Palais Comtal, including a two-sided painting by Dandré-Bardon (August punishing the defalcators),
•Granet, after Constantin, has a room devoted entirely to his work, showing just how important his work has been in the history of this museum,
• Ingres deserves a grand display with Jupiter and Thétis (neoclassical room),
•naturalist and academic painting from the 19th Century,
•with the donation of “Cézanne to Giacometti”, the Granet museum sees its focal point shift:19th Century painting around Giacometti, Bran van Velde, Nicolas de Staël, Mondrain, Tal Coat,etc..
