This grid pattern quarter was conceived in the XVIIth century by archbishop Mazarin, brother of the Cardinal. A truly luxury "housing estate" for parliament members and the bourgeoisie of the period, it is organised around two principal axes: Rue Cardinale and Rue du 4 Septembre.

THE ARBAUD MUSEUM
This townhouse of the end of the 18th century houses the Arbaud museum, named after its creator.An erudite man, he left in 1910 to the town of Aix one of the most important collections of Provençal earthenware, numerous manuscripts and paintings.

THE HOTEL DE CAUMONT
The hôtel de Caumont was built between 1715 and 1742 under the direction of Georges Vallon, by the Marquis de Cabanes, president of the National Audit Office. It is now the Darius Milhaud Conservatory of music and dance.
