17 km to the north of Aix en Provence between Trevaresse and Durance, at the gate of the Luberon, is the lovely little Provençal village of Rognes, whose name first appeared in 1092 as “Castrum de Rougnis” It has succeeded in preserving its character while developing all the essential facilities of a modern town. The village was built on one of the outliers, "Le Foussac", which characterises
the site of Rognes.
It can be seen from all sides, protected by the magnificent wall with its "legendary window", the only remaining feature of the mighty castle. The mediaeval hilltop village was destroyed by the earthquake of 1909.
