As an introduction to the upcoming Querida Comadre exhibition, the Musée des Tapisseries is presenting a selection of work by Marcel Sahut exploring the theme of dance, taken from the artist's donation of 412 drawings to Aix-en-Provence Council in 2008.
Between 1934 and 1974, Marcel Sahut captured the true spirit of the greatest stage artists for forty years. The productive artist produced almost 600 paintings and several thousand drawings using every technique: charcoal, red chalk, wash drawing, ink and soft-lead pencil.
The painter and illustrator handled any subject: landscapes, portraits, still lifes, nudes. His paintings are silent, stationary and frozen in time whilst his drawings convey movement, immediacy and capture fleeting moments with fine detail.
He brings you a panorama of dance with dancers' silhouettes from all backgrounds be it classical, music hall or world dance.
