Village fete

The Bravade celebrates the winter solstice (St John the Evangelist), the longest night of the year. St John's Day is very close to Christmas and celebrates the journey into the new year with lots of music and dancing. The event also celebrates the tradition of offerings: on Christmas Day, groups of musicians used to visit local senior figures to perform music and give them a "pompe à l'huile" cake so popular in Provence.

▶ at 2pm, gather on Place de l'hôtel de ville

▶ at 2.30pm, Cours Mirabeau, Bravade Christmas "pompe" gift to the city's authorities during an event involving a multitude of traditional Provençal figures. From "chivau-frus" and Italian flag throwers to dancers and musicians from all over the region, over 200 participants bring the city to life with pomp and colour.
