Théâtre de l'Archevêché

With its grand staircase, medieval vaults and 17th-century wings enclosing an almost square space, the courtyard of the former archbishop's palace is a jewel in the crown of Aix's heritage and one of the most evocative places in the old city's past.
Transformed into a theatre one evening in 1948, it has become the iconic venue of the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence.

The latest renovations, carried out in 1998, enhanced the façades and created a special relationship between the stage and the audience. Every summer, the Théâtre de l'Archevêché exudes a magical atmosphere, that of ‘Don Juan aux étoiles’ evoked by François Mauriac.
